1 & 2. 12 MONTHS TO SIMPLICITY--FEBRUARY STYLE
&
ASK PATTY THE ORGANIZER
Each month in 2003, we are going to explore how
to organize and simplify a different aspect of life.
Since a subscriber asked about photographs and it
goes
along the theme of loved ones for Valentine's Day,
I am
combining the 2 sections for simplicity! Here is
the
question a subscriber wrote:
Dear Patty,
I "inherited" my parents' pictures when
they died and,
combined with my own, there are now two huge bins.
My family has gone through these several times,
but after a while it just gets tiresome. We don't
want the
pictures to be damaged from being shuffled around
so much.
Any ideas? A magic wand perhaps!
Ruth Ann Hobrock, Beardstown, Illinois
Dear Ruth Ann,
Family photos are treasures, but only if they are
preserved properly and accessible to view when desired.
My suggestion to you is to have the whole family
over
again specifically to go through the photos, each
taking
exactly what they want. I know you say you have
tried
this before, but it needs to be the purpose of the
meeting,
not just an aside idea (and it may take more that
1 meeting).
As you all go through them, I suggest that you sort
through
and categorize them into areas that make sense to
you (time,
event, occasion, people, places, size, etc.). Contrary
to what
you may think, it IS ok to throw away a really bad
picture,
especially if it is hard to view (older pictures
tend to fade).
If you don't like the idea of albums for the pictures
that you
keep, you may want to consider photo bins that hold
packets
or groups of photos. Each individual packet or group
can then
be organized according to your categories. Always
label
both the bin and the individual packet and be sure
that the
containers you buy are designed to protect and preserve
your
photos.
Remember it will take time for this process to happen,
but
it is a worthwhile investment to honor those before
you!

5. IN CLOSING -- OVERWHELMING
There are times when so much is happening that you
feel
there is no human way you can do it all. This is
a good time
to stop everything, list on paper all of the things
that you have
to, and grab your calendar.
From your list, schedule each activity on the day
that you will
actually be doing that task. If you try to keep
everything in
your head, it keeps swirling around and around until
you just
become paralyzed and you can't do any of the tasks.
When you feel overwhelmed, it's important to realize
that
you don't have to do everything this very minute.
It's called
planning and it works. Try it for a month and the
overwhelming
feelings will disappear.
Check your calendar daily and cross the items off
that you have
completed. It is satisfying and it guides you through
your
days without all the swirling!
Here's to simplifying your life!
Until March (come on Spring!),
Patty
