1. 12 MONTHS TO SIMPLICITY - YOUR GARAGE

Believe it or not, garages are intended for cars.
I'm not making that up!

Even though I specialize in business organizing,
I think it is important to have an organized home
life, making your day at work that much more stress-free.

I know it's August and your garage may be the
least of your worries, but wouldn't it be nice
to be able to put your car inside during the
winter months? It is the greatest experience to get into
a garage temperature car as opposed to one that has
been sitting in subzero temperatures overnight.

So where do you start? One of the best things to
do is to start by emptying out your entire garage.
Talk about motivating. The only time I recommend
doing this is on a sunny and warm day and on a day
that you can totally dedicate to this project. That's
why you are reading about this in August.

If this is the tact that you choose to take, then
take a look around to determine the best way to store
things BEFORE you empty the garage. How could you best
use cabinets, shelves, bike racks, tool benches,
etc.? Map out how you would like the garage to look
when you are finished organizing.

There are companies that specialize in garage storage
and design. One that I would recommend in the
Pittsburgh area is www.ClassicCustomClosets.com and
nationally visit www.garagestoragecabinets.com.
Take a look at what is available out there to make
your garage functional for you.

Gather those that will be helping you and let them
know the plan. On the day you attack the garage,
start by pulling everything out, sorting it into
categories as you do. Put all gardening tools in one
spot, sports equipment in another, etc.

When you come across something that is trash, throw
it away! Make sure that you have as many trash bags
as you can get your hands on. You may even consider
renting a dumpster for the project (depending on the
severity of your garage).

Let me warn you now, it gets REALLY ugly before it
gets pretty. When the garage is empty, clean it out,
paint it if you need to (floor, walls), and put in the
storage systems that you have purchased. Or have
the company that you have hired come by and do their
installation.

Now is the time to be very critical and picky as to
what you allow back into your garage. As you do, assign
a home for each item that makes sense. It's amazing
how things will make their way back to where they belong
when you give them a home.

Be creative with your storage ideas. If you store items
in containers, be sure to label those containers! Don't
make it hard later on...you will forget what is inside
and you will end up taking each one down to locate things.

This is a big undertaking, but one that is so worth it.
As you get into your garage temperature car this winter,
you will soon agree!

2. IN CLOSING -- LOOKING FOR SIMPLICITY

If you have made the conscious decision of going from
clutter to simplicity in your life, I would love to
talk to you.

I am in the process of writing my second book called
"The Power of Simplicity!", and in order to gain
perspective, I would like to consider including some
real life stories.

If you fit this profile and would like to be considered
for an interview via phone or email, please send me an
email to patty@kreamerconnect.com with POWER in the
subject line.

You may remain anonymous in the book if you are included.
Whether you tried simplicity and liked it, didn't like it,
were successful, or weren't successful, I'd like to talk to you.

Enjoy the rest of your summer and go organize your garage!

Here's to simplifying your life!

Until September,

Patty
